To make them all distinctive, but familiar. For example, on this one, we developed a full-figure dragon, with the body reflecting the shape of a three, and the tail wrapping the border three times. It finally got down to two designs. A tough call as they loved both of them.

But the crew came through and made the hard decision, as would be expected from NASA astronauts! They will carry the patch into space with them. A lavishly illustrated limited edition of Robt. A question: does NASA ever merchandise these patches? I would think a lot of space enthusiasts would be thrilled to get one. My China-made patch is quite different from the published photos, but the difference might be less in reality.

As I live in Germany and got the patch from a local dealer, it is not so easy to complain. Are you able to order from A-B specifying which manufacturing you want to receive? Which version would be considered authoritative? Does NASA mix both provenances in their official use? I have tried on a number of occasions to request certain patches. But unfortunately it's a game of chance as to what you receive. But for current and new patches like the SpaceX Crew-2 you are more likely to receive the "Made In USA" version, as the "Made In China" versions are kept back in their sealed packs of 10 and sold to their agents, retail sellers and other outlets that way.

Also it is down to supply and demand as well. Rarely from patches made in China or Taiwan or Mexico.
